Whitehorse - Johnson's Crossing, Yukon
June 10

I struggled to get going early from my hotel room in order to eat breakfast with the rest of the bicycle group at their campsite several miles away. My friend Richard Lawrence drove me there. As it turned out we didn't eat until around 9:00.

It was a really long day. There were brutal headwinds blowing right down our throats through most of the day. It was especially slow going from Whitehorse to Marsh Lake.

It took me 10 hours to ride the first 65 miles and another couple of hours to reach Johnson's Crossing. Ritt, Carol and I didn't reach camp until after 8:00 PM. We were pleasantly surprised to find that Bob, Nelson and Bill (who had all arrived several hours earlier) had set up our tents for us. But, we were beat.

In the evening we built a campfire (after Nelson used a whole pack of matches trying to light it) and with Karen's middle school expertise, toasted marshmallows between chocolate and graham crackers, to produce "s'mores." Tim became thoroughly addicted. Note the fact that though it was about 10:00 PM, it was still daylight. That's the was it is up here in June. The sun never really sets.

I had been salivating all day about the sticky buns at Johnson's Crossing and by the time we got in, the bakery was closed, so I didn't even get to see what was offered but Nelson took a picture.

Tom surprised us the following morning by feeding us sticky buns from the bakery. They were great.

80 Miles.
